Vienna to Budapest - off to see the Queen Unplugged Project

Filed under: Queen, Holidays — Sarah @ 22:15:41

On the 16 February, we woke up to a very cold Vienna and decided to have a look around until lunchtime! We even saw some snow!!

Snow in Vienna!

Vienna

We then headed to the train station to get the train to Budapest. The train journey was 3 hours so we arrived at 5pm to a verr, very cold Budapest!
The train station is next to the Nep Stadium where Queen played back in 1986 so I was very excited to see that!

Nep Stadium

We got the metro (which was more like an underground tram) to our hotel near the Octogan and checked in. Had dinner at TGI Fridays which has very slow service and not very nice food then off we went to the Rock Renduvu club to see the fantastic Queen Unplugged Project! Terry and I have seen them before at the Freddie Memorial Weekend in Montreux and they were brilliant! They are also playing at the Queen convention in March!

They gave us a lovely welcome and intoduced us on stage!! :) They played a brilliant set inlcuding a fantastic performance of Great King Rat!

Bratislava to Vienna

Filed under: Queen, Holidays — Sarah @ 13:00:58

Woke up at 10 and had some free breakfast in the club lounge then had a look at the view of the palace from our hotel window!

Spent the morning looking round Bratislava in the cold and also went to Tesco (!!) get some new shoes for Terry. I had no idea Tesco was taking over Eastern Europe and it was more like a department store than a UK Tesco! At lunchtime, we got the train from Bratislava to Vienna which only took an hour. We then got another train to the other main station in Vienna and our hotel was just next door!

We stayed in the Hilton but didn’t stay in the room for too long as we had to go on the hunt for our ‘We Will Rock You’ tickets! There was nobody at the ticket desk of the first place we tried so we walked through the city in the snow! I had a bratwurst hot dog on the way which was a sausage in a baguette type roll with the centre removed!

We found another ticket shop outside the Opera House but the lady there told us the tickets had already been printing so we should collect them at the theatre!

We then went to a lovely restaurant close to our hotel called Plachutta. Terry had traditional Tafelspitz which is boiled beef and I had Wiener schnitzel! The dinner arrived in lots of little pots and it was lovely!!

We went back to the hotel, got changed and got on the underground to go to see the We Will Rock You musical!! We managed to pick up our tickets and went into the theatre. We had a glass of wine in the lovely bar (much nicer than the Dominion Theatre) then went to find our seats. They were up in the first circle and we had a good view! The show is mainly in German, all the speaking bits are in German and some of the songs.

I Want to Break Free – Galileo (German)
I Want to Break Free (reprise) – Scaramouche (English)

The show was brilliant and I did manage to understand what was going on even though I don’t know any German. I have seen the London one a few times and the script is similar although some of the jokes were about famous German people instead!

Our Valentines trip to Bratislava, Vienna and Budapest - in 3 days!!

We flew from Bristol on the Ryanair flight to Bratislava after having a relaxing glass or two of wine in the lounge! The flight was just over 2 hours and arrived in Bratislava at 9.30pm. By the time we had got a taxi to the hotel and checked in, it was 10pm. We stayed in the Crowne Plaza and got a free upgrade so had use of the lounge so went for a few free drinks. We then headed to the Casino where Terry lost all his money!! We were too late for dinner so pigged out on pizzas from the room service menu at 1am!

Nerja, Spain

Terry and I went over to Spain to surprise his mum and dad who were there on holiday for a week! We flew on Thursday night from Bristol to Malaga then stayed in Malaga for the night! We went out for my favourite, tapas as we arrived quite late and had over done it with the wine on the way there! :) Our hotel was very close to Malaga cathedral and the old town!

Malaga cathedral

The next day we walked to the bus station and stopped off at a local market on the way! We then got the bus from Malaga to Nerja. It took about an hour and a half to get to Nerja. When we got off the bus, it was lovely and sunny! We got some very odd looks walking to the hotel, I was dressed in black and Terry was dressed in dark blue and black!

We checked into the hotel, put on some summer clothes and went for a wander!

Our holiday to Italy, Malta and Montreux!

Filed under: Queen, Holidays — Sarah @ 12:00:06

We decided to go on holiday by train to Malta, via Venice, Rome and Sicily and coming back via Milan and Montreux. It all started with the packing, one small suitcase each and that was it for a 2 and a half week holiday!!!

We went to London on the night of Thursday 23rd August and met up with a few of Terry’s friends and called in to see Parky on the way back to hotel!

Friday morning, we got up and I had breakfast. Terry had some work to do so I got everything ready and we eventually went to Waterloo to go on the Eurostar to Paris for probably the last time as it will be going from St Pancras from November this year!

London Waterloo

The eurostar!

So off we went to Paris! We arrived about 5pm French time and had to get from Gare du Nord to Gare du Bercy.

Gare Du Nord

We got the train from Gare de Nord to Gare De Lyon which is the closest metro station to Gare du Bercy. We stopped for a drink and a croque monsieur in the cafe across the road.

Beer!

Me

We then walked to Gare Du Bercy, stopping to get wine and cheese in a local shop on the way! I had to get a plastic knife and a bottle opener too for the train journey, which was not easy in French! Terry then pretended that we had missed the train and I was not impressed! Sat in the lounge area for an hour before we finally did actually get the train!! We got the overnight train from Paris to Venice where it arrived at 7am! We had our own little rooms with sink and bunk beds!

We decided to try the restaurant where we were sitting with two French girls and were served by an Italian lady who was like a strict school dinner lady!! I had pasta, followed by some meat stuff, and Terry had seafood pasta (cold!!) followed by some of the same meat stuff that I had!! Very expensive and not very nice!

The restaurant

Me in the restaurant!

I managed to sleep ok but Terry was awake and saw Milan! We had breakfast using the provisions we bought in the shop in Paris!

Saturday morning, we pulled into Venice over the big bridge! It was a beautiful city and as we left the train station, we could see our hotel over the over side of the canal!

The next day we slept until midday then checked out as late as we could because we had to be out until midnight when we were getting the train to Rome! It was another very very hot day. We went over to Murano, one of Venice’s islands, on the boat and stopped for a snack! It was a very quiet island, although it was a sunday! I had a cheese toastie in a cafe then we went to the glass museum!

The next day we didn’t go out until late as we were getting an overnight train again! It was very very hot so we decided to take it easy and go on a bus tour of Rome!! We wandered past this pig on the way to get the bus! Scary!

We stopped for lunch in a ‘Scottish’ pub before wandering round using the bus to see more sights before stopping for early dinner at the place we went for lunch the day before!

We then went to get our train but unfortunately the carriage we booked was flooded so we were downgraded to the same type of room we had been in on the other trains. The man wrote something in Italian on our ticket to give to customer services when we arrived! It was a long train journey this time as we were going all the way down to Catania in Sciliy. The train even got on a ferry at one point!!

It was another hot day and we arrived in Catania at about 9am. We were getting a ferry down to Malta at around lunchtime so we decided to walk into the town to have a look around and have a drink. We found a market which seemed to involve lots of shouting in Italian and scary looking fish!!

We then walked for what seemed like ages to get to the Port. It was nothing like a Port in the UK and the passenger terminal seemed to be a small hut and we had to wait outside in the sun for the ferry!

I had left some of the documents at check in by accident so when we arrived on the ferry, there was an announcement for ‘Mrs Watkin’ to see customer services. I wandered over to collect my lost documents then fell asleep. Terry thought it would be funny to take this photo!

We arrived in Valletta and had to wait for our bags to be unloaded from the ferry! We then got a taxi to take us to our hotel in St Julians Bay. We stayed in the Intercontinental Hotel.

Our room was lovely and probably bigger than my flat! It had two bathrooms, a bedroom, a lounge, 2 balconies and a terrace with sun loungers and a table!
